From July 23rd to 24th, 2024, the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Education Centre (Gdh. AEC) hosted a highly successful hydroponics training session, drawing enthusiastic participation from 31 grade 9 and 10 students. The program was designed to equip students with essential knowledge and hands-on experience in hydroponic growing techniques and disease management.
The training covered a comprehensive range of topics crucial for successful hydroponic farming. Students learned about the principles of hydroponics, different growing systems, nutrient solutions, and the advantages of soil-less cultivation. Special attention was given to disease management, an essential aspect for maintaining healthy and productive hydroponic systems.
The session also highlighted the benefits of using Effective Microorganisms (EM) in hydroponic setups. EM can enhance nutrient uptake, improve plant growth, and help manage diseases, making them an invaluable addition to hydroponic farming.
The enthusiasm and eagerness of the students were palpable throughout the training. One student expressed her determination to apply the knowledge gained practically, particularly in ensuring the success of their planned hydroponics setup. This sentiment was echoed by many of her peers, reflecting the overall positive reception of the training
The success of this training session underscores the importance of educating the younger generation on sustainable and innovative agricultural practices. By equipping students with such knowledge, we are fostering a future generation that values and practices sustainable farming, which is crucial for the continued prosperity of the Maldives' agriculture sector.
The Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Education Centre's commitment to providing high-quality education and training opportunities for its students is commendable. This hydroponics training session is a testament to their dedication to fostering innovation and sustainability in agriculture.
