Fuvahmulah farmers share concerns

The farmers of Fuvahmulah shared their concerns with Prime Maldives about the everyday difficulties they face. 

The farmers shared their concerns with the Prime Maldives teams, who visited the farming fields of Fuvahmulah. The farmers expressed that their biggest concern is the problem of theft.

“We don’t have proper protection. Sometimes all our crops are lost to theft. We have raised these issues with the authorities numerous times, but in vain”, one farmer shared her concern candidly.

The other main issue shared by the famers is lack of training and awareness. Most of the farmers spoke said that they do farming as a passion. They said that they need proper training to identify diseases and especially awareness on using supplements and pesticides to practice farming at commercial level.

During the visit the Prime Maldives team also met the Mayor of Fuvahmulah Mr Ismail Rafeeq. 

Mr. Rafeeq said that they are considering to incorporate agricultural management component in the city council’s strategic action plan.  

“This plan will outline the ways to address the current issues faced by local farmers. We would be working closely with the authorities to provide safety and security to the farmers. We also have plans to facilitate awareness and training opportunities for the local farmers, youth and students to promote food security and self-sustainability,” said the mayor. 

Mr Mohamed Zahid – Sales and Marketing Manager and Ms Fathimath Adam, HR & Admin Manager participated the visit on behalf of Prime Maldives.
